about

Chapel Perilous or How To Lose Yourself Completely is a multi-channel electroacoustic piece devised by Helena Ford. The term Chapel Perilous is a psychological state in which the affected is unsure whether their experience is affected by a supernatural force or is a product of their own imagination; the piece explores this through use of field recordings and pure feedback, created by electronic effects and no-input mixing board. Furthermore, omnidirectional microphones have been placed around the room to capture the room tone, much like John Cage’s seminal and controversial piece 4’33. The piece melds this with a recording I made of piano wire and feedback tones to mimic the experiences of those influenced by EMFs, or electromagnetic fields, which often cause migraines and other symptoms in the sufferer. The lasting effect is, hopefully, a psychoacoustic phenomena that mirrors this experience.
