Grandpa’s Arthritic Hands (A Song for Hershall)

about

This is a song for and from my grandfather, Hershall; the piece is created from an old tape loop, which is fed through a synthesizer, and through multiple electronic manipulators, filters, and delays to create the spectral sound you hear on the recording.

My grandfather always had a penchant for music: he loved playing guitar, singing, and (in his words) "pickin". In fact, at one point in his life, he "picked" with the Everly family (of Everly Brothers fame) back home in Kentucky! He even bought a tape machine for his family, which he passed down to my mother and her siblings, which eventually found it's way to me.

In the later years of his life, the music that he loved became almost an affliction for him. He had arthritis and it, like many other musicians, claimed his hands. Playing the guitar was physically painful for him; and it shows on this recording. "You Are My Sunshine" was his song for his wife (my grandmother), and the pain in his playing can be heard in every note.

I'd like to think that were my Grandfather alive today, he'd be proud of me for sharing this song with you all.
